Art of the Deal
I have a friend named Eric... And he kept going from thing to thing. He held so many Jobs not even Eric knew where he was. From Dishwasher at restaurants, to Actor (with minor success), and even wrestler. And with each endeavour, he would throw himself in Full Force.
Like with acting, he got up and fully moved to Vancouver. Worked on his craft, took classes, got an agent, auditions, the whole bit. Then with Wrestling, he moved to Calgary, and did it again. Classes, hard work, the gym. Everything this guy did, he did it hard and well.
But something was missing. He just didn't like all these things. So one day, he decided to go back to his roots, what he loved as a kid. Art!
He moved over to Montreal, took up drawing school, and went full tilt. Again. During this period of his life, things went actually pretty well. He would study, practice, in essence "train" with art the same way he did with ... well everything. Acting, wrestling, gym, it all began to blend together in a beautiful cocophony of hard work.
Now with art, it is the essence of all things. So funny, that such a superflous endevor, such as drawing, which is constantly debated by people in the same way: "What's the point?" Is actually the essence of all things.
I will say it again. The single endeavour on Earth that seems to have absolutely no purpose. Is the essence, and the most important human endeavour.
Why? It encompasses all the others, in one. Samurais, when they wrote books, named their craft an Art. One of the earliest and best books and warcraft strategy, is the Art of War. Same with acting. It is an Art to master the craft of acting. And same with coding. Past a certain point of utility, when you reach mastery, you become an Artist. "The code looks pretty" i've heard many times in my own career.
So Eric took up Art! After all the others. And in his new role, he learned the essence of all things. They taught him to be a good Artist, we must detach from our own attachment. Philosophy at its finest. We must "allow" for the beauty to come out on its own. We must not "attach" to the outcome.
They taught Eric to let go, by constantly throwing out what he started. Draw this fruit, they asked him. And once he was done, the result would be thrown out. This letting go of the outcome, meant that he was "free" in the process.
