Drinking in Japan

What a nice Mother you have
What a nice Mother you have

I had arrived in Kobe after a long train journey,

Because I wanted to save money on the Shinkansen (the bullet train),

but at the exact same time go to Hiroshima,

The Journey was so absolutely long,
I thought why not stop on the way in Kobe Bryant’s namesake?

And eat some Kobe beef.

So I arrive and enter this wonderfully quaint little hostel, with a beautiful room full of clean beds and a nice little kitchen.

I walked outside and thought I want to eat Kobe beef, so i find this little butcher shop and get 6 or 7 fatty pieces (nuggets really) of beef. The striations of fat were crazy. Each one a cube, with fatty lines all along its outer fascade.

How the hell am I gonna cook this I thought?

I go back to the Hostel take out a pan, without any oil, I just thought I’d wing it. I dump the pieces in and … whalla the fatty beef was enough oil to cover the pan.

I couldn’t believe it. I’d cooked for years, and in literally 2 or 3 minutes they were ready. Perfectly seared over the gas stove.

I took them out and plopped them in my mouth. Moments like this traveling, when you can get delicious high quality japanese beef for 5$ cad… what can I say but I was elated.

Later I headed out to the night market, completely covered by a long glass dome. The entire street was the market. So dark, but almost empty. I barely saw anybody out. On the side I kept seeing these little bars and shops, some were dollar stores. I entered but quickly got bored.

After walking the entire length of the place I headed back to where I started and entered a restaurant that caught my eye. I was served by a seemingly 16 year old, who was very nice and asked about my travels. The chef was quite a bit older. They sat me down next to this Japanesse man, who looked very tired. But smiling he ordered. I looked over and he shared some of his food, and ordered me a local beer. I was grateful and we drank together.

A few glasses in the man shifted completely…

He became the most jovial man on the planet. Turns out he was a cop. And I guess he just finished his shift. I thought he’d have a chill job… the city was completely empty!

I couldn’t believe my eyes. In a matter of minutes he was laughing and sharing stories. He pulled out his phone completely exuberant, pointing at a photo of a woman.

I looked in wonder.

“Is this your mother?” I thought, my Kurdish blood coming to the fore.

“My wife!” he beamed with pride.

“Oh how lovely!”

“Canada” he pointed.

“Oh it looks like Banff!”.. ‘Amazing!’ I said.

All over the world. All a man needs is a beer, some roasted meat, and a buddy to gush over their adoration for their wife. He was nice. She seemed alright. What am I supposed to say?

Overall we had a good night. I went home and slept in my comfy bed after watching some DragonBall Z episodes on an old archival website in the dark kitchen after the other roommate had gone to bed. In the same Kitchen I’d eaten the Kobe beef. Now my stomach full, my mind racing with thoughts of Banff from the beer, and my heart warm knowing I had made a Japanese man happy.
