Half Eaten

It had been years since I went to the steakhouse. Years seriously. Not since I was a child or anything crazy like that. But I’d definitely changed.
We went into the restaurant and I saw the red carpet (the same as last time), and a nice young server came to greet us. He didn’t seem jaded by the job yet, in a way the middlers are what you have to worry about.
The old timers become part of the place. The middlers are the 30-40 year olds who begin to question themselves ‘will i be here forever?’
The young ones are dumb and naiive ‘i definitely won’t be here forever’.
The old ones are content ‘you know what? it aint that bad. its all a spiritual journey anyways’
The middle ones are depressing shits. I hate middlers.
This young guy takes us to our seat, and I get excited. We sit down and I know what I want already, but I pretend to listen to his bullshit list of specials for the night. I did like the wine list, so i ask him to bring us a couple glasses. I can’t drink too much anymore - I mean I can just the police probably don’t wanna see me again. I’m a miserable person, and alcohol only brings that out - usually I hide it.
We sit and chat about the last time we came in here. We were younger. Had a bit of money we wanted to splash. We were both poorer but somehow happier then. Everything was new to us. Even that blue blazer.
Finally I’m through with the wine and the bread and olive oil, I go straight to it.
“I’d like the rib eye please with that special butter.’ ‘You still have that Argentinan butter right? with the herbs??’
“Oh yes sir. We do. That’s our specialty. The ribeye. Seared on our wood fired oven. Just like in Argentina”
‘Amazing..’ I said quietly. Inside I was so excited I could scream like I was a kid.
So it comes out. Smells the same. The char is perfect. Absolute professionals.
As I eat it, something feels off.
‘What do you mean. Half eaten. That’s ridiculous.’
“NO. I’m serious Fil. I’m serious. They’ve touched my food!”
‘No they haven’t’
“Yes. Its not like they licked it or anything. It’s the same weight. The cut looks whole. But It just feels like… empty! Like they took a bite out of it.”
‘Just. eat. your. food.’
“EVERYTHING IS LIKE THIS NOW.”
‘You’re just old and bitter and depressed and mad all the time. Nothing to do with the hardworking restaurant people. It tastes THE EXACT SAME!’
“You don’t know anything about the world. You just stayed in the same towns we grew up in. Never really saw anything. Never slept with random strangers in beachy sands abroad.”
‘Ya that’s why I’m happily married. Like you should be after that wonderful wedding. How was the honey moon btw?’
“Well you know we’d kept ourselves for marriage right? Like we didn’t have sex or anything.”
‘Knowing you. I have no idea how you did that.’
“Bro I just didn’t see her. Kept my sidepieces but my soon to be wife I take that shit seriously.”
‘Okay and how was the honey moon.’
“Half eaten.”
