On Language

It is a curious thing that Stanford’s most famous course is Symbolic Systems

Language as Steven King describes it, is beautiful, in that it can describes things as they are…

And things that are not.

“You are sitting in front of me, with a desk in between us, and a vase, containing Yellow Lilies sits on it”

For us as a species to make changes, we have to see things as they are, and change things as they will be.

But before the change takes place in reality, it takes form in our minds,

and the structure of the vision, is usually described by Language.

Language is powerful, because it describes things as they are, and things that could be.

This power is incredible, in that we can describe anything

Even things that are not yet existent.

These non-existent forms are concepts, and concepts can be mixed together with grammar to create new concepts, in an infinite way.

Some would describe this as the Software to our Hardware.

Neurons firing in real material ways, describing concepts that are immaterial.

Writers are divine. As they work with the immaterial, conceptual, world of forms.

Herein is a line from one of the greatest writers: “To be or not to be, that is the question”

The fact that we are here, that you exist, is beautiful. Why, because the opposite could be true. You could not be.

The existence of anything at all, takes form, and is so utterly astounding when we compare it to the nothing that it could be.

To be or not to be, that is the question.
