One Yellow Card

To win it all
A founder's argument for using one strategic yellow card: breaking accepted rules is often how startups escape crowded paths and create something different.

I'm going to share a few things I've learned as a startup founder that might help you in other areas of your life / career.

It's okay to get *one Yellow card in a game of Football. In fact, using that Yellow card in the right places is a strategic *advantage. It's about when and how you use it.

So: break some rules. Okay you might say: "Everybody says that!"

Give me a second and I'll show you why this is important.

The problem is that by doing things the "normal" way, and staying within the lines, you simply won't do anything ****different.

The rules by definition are a track set out by someone, or a system or sorts.

By following those rules, in essence we are following the track.

And nobody did anything *different by following the same trail right?

Now let's continue with this thought.

Why is it important to be a tad bit different?

Because any trail followed already has hit its profit limit. This is a theory in economics, that has been true time and again. When an industry first starts out, there isn't that much competition (it just started). So the first movers have some advantages, first of which is choosing the price. However as time goes on, they become entrenched, with many advantages that come with that.

Therefore, if you want to actually beat these advantaged companies, you in essence have to do something a bit different. Think about it this way, if someone already is using a toothbrush and its fine, why would they switch? Its too much mental hassle.

'this one glows in the dark and is fun for your kids! it'll get them to actually brush their teeth'

This is what i mean about breaking the rules. Break the mental rule, or obstruction. Break the way that things are done.

Get some yellow cards in life (try to stay away from the Red cards - ahem Bernie Madoff)

Funny story about YC. Every single YC application i've sent in has been rejected. Only one succeeded and we made it to the interview stage. I believe it was my fault we never made it to the end (not any of my co-founders). Anywho, every single rejection, I ended up coding faster, and harder to prove them wrong. Here's to another year, another YC application.
