“And Billy… who is your Father?”

My dad is Rory MacMillon. The Fighter that beat Jose Calderon! He was a champ!

….groaning is heard in the back of the room

What of it! Your dad’s just a Bus Driver. Who gives a fuck.

…more groaning.

Whatever.

You see Billy’s dad was Champ of the World. But in an unfortunate twist of events, he had a back to back defence. Scheduled literally the next day.

Some call him the world’s most unfortunate man.

The Champ. But only for a day.

Fortune so short lived, the champagne barely had time to dry from the night of partying… and he had to defend the title.

“The very next day!?” Why. He wondered. Why me?

He worked his whole life to be the Champ. The sponsor contracts barely had time to be mailed back after signing. The poor guy didn’t even have time to rest, recover, take it all in.

So it was that the Champ became a saying of sorts. “Its not enough to be good one day! You don’t wanna end up like Rory!”

Kids would come home all excited. “Mom! I hit a homerun!”

“Son… don’t get too excited now. One homerun isn’t enough! You don’t wanna end up like Rory do you?”

In a way, Rory outlived many many other champs. Who ended up in the dustbin of history. Forgotten. Rory became a legend.

“I meditated for an hour. I won Gold. I ran my fastest mile.” - chill out brother. You don’t wanna be like Rory do you?

You see. It wasn’t enough to be Champ. No. You must BE the Champ. In and out.

Rory taught us that. But poor Billy was distraught for life.

He would have been happier if his Father was a Bus Driver. A lowly hourly worker. At least that comes with dignity. No. He was Rory’s son. The man who was Champ for only a day.
