The Unsettled Mind

On the myth of ADHD
A personal reflection on restlessness, trauma, and the body’s search for equilibrium.

We drove a van for my birthday up a windy road,

they write about in those adventure books,

where the main characters are free-wheeling,

non-working,

bohemian types.

Without getting too personal,

I realized that day that ADHD, or whatever label they put on kids,

isn’t actually what we thought it was…

It’s a form of trauma in the body, with the underlying root cause,

extremely similar to PTSD.

The body is in disarray, where the person with the ‘symptoms’

feels uncomfortable in their own skin.

A constant need for equilibrium, they move from one thing to another,

in search to douse the fire which is their own nervous system…

A mind unsettled, is like any other system. It seeks to get back to normal.

This search, results in a person unable to sit still…

Until they find their one outlet, then they obsess over it, similar to a totem,

they hold on tight…
