The way of things

Technology moves in lockstep
A reflection on how difficult technologies become commonplace, then obscure again.

Things that were hard,

are now seemingly easy,

and will be difficult again.

When industries first pop up,

classic economics says higher profits are available to the first entrants.

Since there isn't as much competition.

I believe another reason for this is initial industries are difficult.

Everybody's all tooled up for the previous technology.

Until the knowledge disperses through various means...

Everybody then moves in lockstep,

as the knowledge diffuses through the labor-market.

Then, the thing that was hard becomes commonplace...

After a while, adjacent industries catch up as well,

and begin to build tooling for the new tech.

Until the old tech is so seldom practiced, that it becomes difficult.

Who knows Fortran anymore?

And everybody's on the internet.

Pretty soon, you'll all have an AI agent for everything from purchasing to Selling...
